		<description> homeINTIMATE DIALOGUES ON LANGUAGE, TECHNOLOGY AND BIOHACKING
curated by Arianna Forte at Mz*Baltazar’s Lab

Exhibition opening on&#38;nbsp; 27th of May at 19:00&#38;nbsp;
at Mz* Baltazar’s Lab, Jägerstraße 52-54, Vienna
28th May – 10th June

Who is Louisa?
Louisa is every woman who has to deal with issues concerning her body and also her intimacy everyday.
How many difficulties does she face in her everyday life, from social stigma to medical bias?
How able is she at finding information on her own, or thanks to networking and sisterhood?
Can technology, platforms or new tools help her?
Louisa is one and more archetypes of people identified by designer Giulia Tomasello, together with Isabel Farina medical anthropologist, during their user research studies and&#38;nbsp;educational processes regarding the contested field of intimate care&#38;nbsp;Louisa becomes the narrative device for investigating two of Giulia’s main projects: Future&#38;nbsp;Flora and ALMA. Both of them are focused on overcoming the taboos related to the female&#38;nbsp;body, its functioning, its genitals and its fluids, creating new tools for claim and exploration in&#38;nbsp;health and (self-)care. The former uses microorganisms and do it yourself practices and the&#38;nbsp;second inclusive wearable technologies, both of which imagine new solutions to empower&#38;nbsp;women over their own bodies and are based on research and community care.

BIOFILIE is the scientific research lab and documentation archive for feminist’s practices and humid uterus that, for the first time and exhaustively, narrates the eclectic and transdisciplinary work of Giulia Tomasello and the constellation of collaborators that worked alongside her these years. A journey inside a space set in a near future taking the form of an exhibition thought to engage people in complex topics without drawing clear separations between scientific knowledge, humanism and social innovation.
BIOFILIE is, first of all, an exhibition permeated with the love and passion for life in all its expressions, with special attention given to the plural and inclusive relations that exist between the human and the non human.
To deepen these pioneering forms of knowledge, Tomasello has developed the expertise of a burgomaster, capable of coordinating choral projects ranging from nanosciences to medicine, from design to hacking, supported by the expertise of young professionals working in universities and innovation centres across Europe with the clear aim of focusing their discourse around three crucial issues: feminism, care and bio-design.
From the exhibition’s layout it emerges a radically new approach to knowledge, one that puts on the same level the one generally considered high with the low, it deepens the relational and social aspects as well as the numerical ones. A paradigm shift in which education is not a transfer of information, but it plays an essential role for the advancement of knowledge itself, as well as starting from the subjectivity of our bodies becomes a fundamental premise for understanding and taking care of them. In this regard, ALMA shows us, that when experimenting with biotechnologies for women's care, technological research, "by design", must necessarily be accompanied by an investigation on cultural barriers and taboos connected to women's bodies, putting them at the centre. From this awareness, projects that can be considered militancy are born. Rethinking the Bra, created together with a worldwide community of women with the aim of rethinking bras to embrace everyone's bodies, appears among non-conforming bodies wearing non-conforming underwear. TNUC and Nessunə esclusə tell us about workshop experiences showing how the sharing of knowledge through feminist actions must leave the laboratories to reach men and women in the workplace, on the street and at home. The most intimate room of the exhibition, however, is the one dedicated to Future Flora, winner of the STARTS Prize 2018. A kit to prevent and treat vaginal infections becomes an opportunity to talk about biohacking and the symbiotic relationships between humans and other forms of life, an example of a change of perspective on how to compare ourselves with the countless other living beings that co-inhabit the Earth.
BIOFILIE is, ultimately, an opportunity to question how we are changing the way we interpret and question the world, no matter if about biological or social issues. And it suggests that it's time to choose how we want technology to enter all aspects of our lives.

BIOFILIE is a Sineglossa and Giulia Tomasello production.

Permanent at MAK Museum Vienna
WINNER OF STARTS PRIZE 2018&#38;nbsp;Grand Prize – Artistic Exploration: Awarded for artistic exploration and art works where appropriation by
the arts has a strong potential to influence or alter the use, deployment or perception of technology.
Future Flora is a harvesting kit designed for women to treat and prevent vaginainfections.
The human body is composed for the 90% of different microorganisms, most of which are beneficial to their host.

Microbes as bacteria, fungi and viruses are part of our skin flora, covering both the inside and the outer surface of our body. Even though invisible to our eyes, our microflora has a symbiotic relationship with the interface between our body and the environment - our skin.

Flora aims to incentive this symbiotic relationship that raises the beneficial presence of microbes and bacteria in the human body. This proposal uses techniques of microencapsulation of targeted bacteria in a non-woven fabric making it possible to wear the probiotics that keep our body healthy. Creating scaffolds for the exponential bacterial growth in appropriate areas of the body, our clothes and accessories become the ecosystem that balance and support our skin flora.&#38;nbsp;
On demand&#38;nbsp;GIRL BIOPHILIA
A short documentary based on the research and project of Future Flora made
in collaboration
with Creative Producer and Director Maja Zupano.
